The Gond and Baiga are the main tribal communities of the Mandla and Balaghat region around Kanha National Park. Their villages, farms and festivals are part of the landscape you pass on the way to the safari gates. Both communities have rich traditions of song and dance that mark the seasons, harvests and celebrations.
Performances usually feature group dances in traditional dress and jewellery, set to the beat of drums and folk songs. Dances such as the Karma, linked to the harvest season, are common in central India's tribal belt. The rhythm builds slowly, the circle grows and guests are often invited to join in. Every evening is a little different, depending on the performers and the season.
